How to Start 983 Hitzer Coal Stove

The Hitzer Corporation, headquartered in Adams County, Indiana, manufactures the Model 983 coal burning fireplace as an insert for traditionally built masonry fireplaces. It is designed to heat up to 3,000 square feet of space and throw out over 100,000 BTUs using sixteen directional air baffles and two blowers. Instructions

    • 1

Pull the damper handle--located over the main fuel door--out towards you until it stops.

    • 2

Crumple up several pieces of newsprint and place them over the center of the firebox. Arrange small wood kindling over the newsprint and set it alight with a match.

    • 3

Add a 2-inch thick layer of coal over the grate once the kindling has begun to burn. Allow this first layer of coal to burn until it glows red.

    • 4

Layer on another 2 inches of coal over what is glowing red already. When the first 4 inches of coal are glowing red, add more coal over top.

    • 5

Slide the draft on the ash door into a partially or fully open position as desired. Open the spinners on the main fuel door for a period if desired.

    • 6

Adjust the two air draft slides located above the fuel door to control the efficiency of the coal burn rate. Open them more by pushing them out towards the side of the box and close them by pushing them towards the center of the unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always open the damper before you open the main doors to add more fuel by pulling the damper handle out to prevent smoke from entering your interior space.
