How to Turn Off the Editing Marks in a Word Document

Editing marks in a Word Document appear as red underlined text which can be really helpful if you want to know exactly what has been changed or deleted from a text. If you just want to write and are not editing, then the editing marks can be extremely frustrating. Editing marks in an MS word document can be switched on or off through the "Track Changes" features in both Word 2003 and Word 2007.

Instructions

  1. Word 2007

    • 1

Click on the "Review" tab at the top of the Word 2007 document.

    • 2

Check that the "Changes" button is highlighted; this confirms that the "Track Changes" function which is giving you the editing marks, is on.

    • 3

Click on the "Changes" button to un-highlight it and turn the "Track Changes" feature off.

    Word 2003

    • 4

Click on "Tools" on the top of the Word 2003 document.

    • 5

Check that the icon next to the "Track Changes" option in the menu is checked, which means that the function is turned on.

    • 6

Click on "Track Changes" in the "Tools" menu to turn the function off.

    • 7

Press "Ctrl+Shift+E" on the keyboard to both turn the "Track Changes" function on and off from the keyboard. This shortcut works with both Word 2003 and 2007 versions.
