How to Encrypt a Linksys

Encrypt the Linksys wireless network.

When a new Linksys wireless router is installed, the default settings allow full open access. The reason is because Linksys wants to have you up and running in as little time and with as little hassle as possible. However, many people live in areas where encrypted wireless access is a must due to overlapping wireless networks from neighborhood homes. When the Linksys wireless network is encrypted, only those possessing the wireless encryption key have access to the network.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a computer directly to the Linksys router with an Ethernet cable. This can be a temporary connection and does not need to be permanent once the configuration is complete.

    • 2

Open a Web browser and go to the address "192.168.1.1" without quotes.

    • 3

Leave the login box blank and enter "admin" for the password.

    • 4

Click the "Wireless" link at the top.

    • 5

      Click the "Wireless Security" link.

    • 6

Click the "WPA2 Personal" setting and enter a password for the wireless network.

    • 7

Click the "Save Settings" button. The Linksys wireless network is now encrypted and requires the password from Step 7 to connect to the network wirelessly. The directly-connected computer from Step 1 can now be optionally removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the WPA2 personal encryption standard because it is currently the strongest setting available for home use.
