How to Mount a Flat Panel to a Wall

How to Mount a Flat Panel to a Wall thumbnail
Mounting a flat-panel television helps protect the set and free floor space.

When many think of flat-panel televisions, they think of the device hung on the wall. Free from traffic patterns and, in homes with small children, curious hands, wall mounting is a safer course of action. When installed correctly, the set is secured to multiple studs. Using standard household tools commonly used to hang heavy pictures and shelves, mounting a flat panel to the wall is well worth the effort.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-panel mounting kit
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket inserts
  • Drill
  • 3/16-inch drill bit
  • Level
  • Allen keys

Instructions

    • 1

Move the stud finder on the wall where you will hang the flat panel. The TV should be about eye-level high when you are sitting. Locate two studs, and mark their locations.

    • 2

Hold the half of the mount that attaches to the wall against the marked areas. Drill through at least four bolt holes into the wall approximately three inches.

    • 3

Place the included bolts through the wall bracket and into the drilled holes in the wall. Use the socket wrench to secure the included bolts and washers through the bracket, snugly against the wall.

    • 4

Line up the TV half of the mount against the inserts on the back of the set. Insert the included small Allen screws and washers through the holes on the TV bracket, and into the inserts. Tighten them fully with the Allen key.

    • 5

Lift the set onto the wall bracket. Secure the mount with the Allen set screws on the wall bracket to prevent the set from sliding laterally.

    • 6

Level the TV. Secure the set's horizontal alignment with the Allen set screw, typically located top-center on the rear of the mount. Consult the mount's bracket for specific location.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's a good idea to have a someone help lift the set.
