How to Dial Long Distance to Canada

How to Dial Long Distance to Canada thumbnail
Dialing a long-distance call to Canada is almost the same from anywhere in the world.

Under the "North American Numbering Plan" (NANP), phone numbers in 19 North American nations -- including the United States, Canada, the Bahamas and Jamaica -- are formatted identically, which means calling Canada is relatively simple if you live in a participating nation. If you don't, the numbers you dial are almost the same, only you'll need to dial an "exit code" to dial outside your country (if you're calling from a land line) or Canada's "country code" if you use a mobile phone to make the call.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the number for proper formatting, specifically the correct number of digits. As is the case with numbers in the United States, Bermuda and the Dominican Republican, Canadian phone numbers follow the format "1-area code-XXX-XXXX," the "area code" being a three-digit sequence that corresponds to the location.

    • 2

Make a long-distance call to Canada from within North America or North American countries not participating in NANP, such as Cuba and Mexico. Whether you use a mobile phone or a land line, simply dial "1" plus the area code plus the seven-digit number. You would dial the number "902-555-1234" as "1-902-555-1234."

    • 3

Call Canada long-distance from a country outside of North America or a NANP non-participant. Dial the exit code ("011") if you're calling from a land line, then the area code and number. If you're using a mobile phone, dial a "+" by holding down the "0" until it appears, then enter the area code and phone number. If you can't get a plus sign to display, key in "00" instead. You would call the number "902-555-1234," for example, by dialing "+1-902-555-1234" or "001-902-555-1234."

Tips & Warnings

  • Although NANP countries format their phone numbers the same, long-distance rates still apply for calls made between them. Contact your mobile or land line service provider to get details on your particular rate.
