How to Compress Tiff Files

A compressed TIFF image retains its original quality.

Compressing a photo can be useful if you wish to make the file size smaller. If you need to send the photograph in an email or upload it to the Internet, reducing the file size makes this faster and easier. When you compress a picture, you simply make the color occupy less space without sacrificing quality. A Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) image file differs from other image formats because they compress without the same degradation that occurs with JPEG files. Use Microsoft Word to compress TIFF images.

Instructions

1. Open Microsoft Word and insert the TIFF image you wish to compress. Select the image by clicking it or double-clicking it. When you have successfully selected the image, it will have a border outlining it.

2. Look in the "Adjust" group within the ribbon and select the "Compress Pictures" icon. Choose the compression rate you desire---for print, screen or email---and click "OK."

3. Right-click the compressed image and click "Save as Picture." Enter a name for the image in the appropriate field, ensure it saves as a TIFF and click "Save."
