Instructions

    • 1

Chooser a room. Build the soundproof booth in confined space such as a closet, bedroom, or garage.

    • 2

Nail Styrofoam insulation to the walls, floor and ceiling of the room. Don't cover doorknobs and light fixtures, however. Make sure that the insulation does not hinder doors.

    • 3

Attach a layer of carpeting over the insulation. Lay the pile side face down against the insulation. Nail the carpeting to the insulation.

    • 4

Empty dozens of egg cartons and cut them in half to provide a third layer of soundproofing. Take the halves of the cartons that held the eggs and attach them to walls and the ceiling. The exact number of cartons you'll need will depend on the size of the room, but for a closet-sized booth that measures roughly seven feet wide and 10 feet deep, you'd need about seven dozen carton halves to completely cover the room.

Test your soundproofing. Record audio or other noise. Have someone stand outside the booth listen. If they hear noise, check your work to ensure no gaps exist in the layers of soundproofing. Place all pieces of insulation flush.

This technic does not absorb sound, trust me. The only thing that stops sound is mass. You will end up cutting out all the top end of your room if you use this technic, which will make your room sound dull. Low frequencies are actually the biggest problem when trying to sound proof a room. Foam, carpet and egg crates are for people who know nothing about the physics of sound. You need to install many layers of drywall (2 to 3) on the walls, and if you have a budget, you can create a room within a room - My advise is to to to another site with better info! I just wanted to give my 2 cents before someone reads this article and runs out to by 100 cartons of eggs and hangs some dirty carpets on the walls. Matt
