How Do I Remove a 1995 GMC Truck Steering Wheel?

The steering wheel on a 1995 GMC truck connects the steering linkage to the wheels. This steering wheel has an airbag for added safety. Over time, the underlying foam on the steering wheel's trim will begin to flake off, making the steering wheel uncomfortable to hold and cosmetically unappealing. To fix the problem, you need to remove the steering wheel and replace it with a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood. Remove the negative terminal then the positive terminal from the battery with an open-end wrench. Allow the truck to sit for 30 minutes before you start working on the steering wheel.

    • 2

Look on the backside of the steering wheel. Push a small, flat head screwdriver into the tiny holes behind the wheel to pop the airbag out of the steering wheel. Unplug the wiring from the airbag and set it aside.

    • 3

Unbolt the center nut on the steering wheel with a 1/2-inch ratchet, extension and socket. Attach a steering wheel puller to the threaded bolts in the steering wheel. Tighten the center of the puller with the ratchet until the steering wheel comes off of the column.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never work on the airbag of a vehicle with the battery connected as it could go off and cause serious bodily harm.
