How to Pause a Chkdsk

How to Pause a Chkdsk thumbnail
The CHKDSK utility can help you keep tabs on the health of your hard disks.

Microsoft's CHKDSK utility checks one or more hard disks for errors, and is best run before Windows has started, when it is most capable of finding and repairing problems. Unfortunately, Windows will simply continue to load when CHKDSK has completed its scan--and since the scan takes a long time, you may not want to sit in front of the computer throughout the whole thing. It can be frustrating to come back and find that Windows has loaded and the results of the CHKDSK scan have vanished. There is no way to actually pause the scan, but you can examine the results it saves to a log file.

Instructions

    • 1

Run the CHKDSK scan at startup as normal.

    • 2

Open the Windows Event Viewer. In Windows Vista and 7, do this by clicking "Start" and typing "event viewer" into the Search box; in Windows XP, click "Start," then "Run," then type "eventvwr" and press Enter.

    • 3

      Click "Windows Logs," then "Application."

    • 4

Click the "Source" button atop the Events list to sort the events alphabetically by their source. Look for logs that came from "wininit," and check their timestamps until you find the one that was made on your most recent reboot. Double click it to open and read the CHKDSK summary.
