Motorcycle Driving Instructions

Always wear protective gear when riding.

Learning how to ride a motorcycle requires patience and practice. It also requires proper certification. All states require that you hold a motorcycle endorsement or at least a learner's permit before riding a motorcycle on public roads. Some require that you pass a motorcycle safety course. Having basic knowledge of your motorcycle's controls and local traffic laws is imperative before you begin riding.

Instructions

    • 1

Don your motorcycle clothing, putting your gloves on last after fastening your helmet.

    • 2

Stand on the left side of the motorcycle where the kickstand is located. Brace yourself by leaning gently against the gas tank and gripping the handlebars. Swing your right leg over the seat and sit down.

    • 3

Start the motorcycle. Turn the ignition key right to the "on" position. Flip the kill switch down to the "on" position. Press the starter button.

    • 4

Fully engage the clutch with your left hand. Push the shift lever down with your left foot into first gear. Slowly let the clutch out until the bike begins to move forward, then twist the throttle slowly and apply steady pressure while you slip the clutch out until the bike moves forward.

    • 5

Shift up by fully engaging the clutch with your left hand while you pull the shifter lever up with your left foot.

    • 6

Turn left by leaning to the left and pushing on the left handlebar. To turn right, lean to the right and push on the right handlebar.

    • 7

Slow the bike down with the right hand and foot brakes. Apply pressure to both brakes simultaneously and with the same amount of pressure.

    • 8

Shift down by fully engaging the clutch and then pushing down on the shifter lever with your left foot. Once the bike is in first gear and you are coming to a stop, keep the clutch fully engaged to avoid stalling the motorcycle.

    • 9

Rest both feet on the ground to stabilize yourself once you come to a complete stop. It is safest to put the motorcycle in first gear instead of neutral in case you must accelerate quickly.

Tips & Warnings

  • A motorcycle safety course is a valuable tool in learning the basics before you ride.

  • Practice starting, stopping and steering in an empty parking lot before heading out onto public roads.

  • Be alert while riding. Other drivers, animals and unsafe road conditions can be hazardous.

  • Apply gentle pressure to the throttle to avoid accelerating too quickly which can result in a wheelie.

  • Do not rely solely on your mirrors; always turn your head to ensure the coast is clear.

  • Never follow other vehicles closely. (see reference 2)
