How to Design a Layout for a Small Kitchen

Small kitchens come in several different shapes, from the narrow galley style kitchen to a tiny box with barely enough room for a refrigerator and stove. Some people may feel stymied by their small kitchen, enough to prevent them from cooking in it. There are ways of designing a kitchen layout that maximizes its space, though. Make sure you install plenty of cabinets and drawers to keep as much as you can off the counter. Invest in smaller appliances, such as an apartment-sized stove. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pantry and refrigerator next to each other near the entrance of the kitchen, so that you can deposit new food into them without having to move about too much. Position the sink so that it is near the food and near cabinets that store dishes so that you can easily put clean dishes away and wash food quickly. Keep order in mind when deciding where to put cabinets, counter tops, pantry shelves and the stove.

    • 2

Remove obstructions, such as foot traffic or cabinetry, from the work triangle. The work triangle is the space between the refrigerator, sink and stove. When cooking, you usually move back and forth between these three areas frequently.

    • 3

Design upward. Make sure of the wall space and even the ceiling when laying out the design for a small kitchen. For instance, hang rods or shelves on the wall to add more storage space. If the ceiling is high enough, hang a pot rack over the main work counter.

    • 4

Put in a window to let in light and make the kitchen seem bigger and brighter. A window over the sink is common, but you can add one wherever you see fit. You may consider one on the wall in front of the work area.

    • 5

Cut into the wall. One way to make a small kitchen look a little bigger is to cut out areas of the wall to hold certain appliances, such as a refrigerator or microwave.
