How to Recycle a Secure Computer
Your computer probably contains private, secure information that you don't want to fall into the wrong hands. Information can be restored from a hard drive even if it has been deleted. For this reason, your only option before recycling a computer is to destroy the hard drive.
Recycling is the best option for disposing of a computer that you no longer need; it is environmentally sound and the materials can be reused. Always recycle your computer instead of throwing it away.

Contact a company that specializes in destroying hard drives. Most companies will visit your home to pick up the hard drive, allow you drop it off at their facilities or send you lockable security bags so you can mail your hard drive via FedEx. Do your research to see what works best for you.

2
Dispose of your hard drive by having it destroyed. Once you've chosen a reputable company to destroy the hard drive, give it and payment to a company representative in person or by mail.

Transport the rest of your computer and accessories to a recycling center that accepts electronics or an electronics dealer that recycles computers. Many nationwide electronics franchises have recycling programs.

Ask for confirmation from both companies, especially the one that destroyed your hard drive. Most of these companies provide a certificate affirming your hard drive was successfully destroyed. Keep this confirmation for your records.
