How to Make a Magnetic Ring

How to Make a Magnetic Ring thumbnail
Magnetic rings allow you to change your ring's appearance rather than having to buy more.

If you like wearing a variety of types of finger rings but don't like the way they take up room in your jewelry box, you might enjoy having a ring whose stone or charm is interchangeable. Using magnets, you can create such a ring, making a magnetic base to which you can attach any number of magnetized cabochons, beads, charms or other decorations. Wear the same ring for casual, formal or everyday wear with simple alterations.

Things You'll Need

  • Finger ring base with setting recess
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Craft magnetic strip
  • Craft shears or strong scissors
  • Epoxy
  • Cabochons or charms

Instructions

    • 1

Make an imprint of the stone recess in the ring finding. Hold a piece of paper over the stone setting area and press the paper against the ring with your finger to make an impression of the shape. Place the paper back on the table and trace the shape with a pencil. Cut out the shape with scissors to use as a pattern.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of magnet to fit into the recess. Place the paper cutout on the magnet board and trace around it with the silver pen. Repeat to make a second of the same shape. Cut out these shapes with scissors, cutting inside the tracing lines for the most accurate size.

    • 3

Glue one piece of magnet into the ring setting; apply the glue to the inside of the setting, then press the magnet in place. Take care to ensure that the glue stays beneath the magnet, and wipe away any that oozes onto the top. Let dry.

    • 4

Place the second magnet over the first to figure out which side of the loose magnet has the right positive or negative charge to line up with the first. If necessary, trim a new piece to find a piece that sticks and lines up with the magnet in the ring.

    • 5

Attach the second piece of magnet to the back of a stone or cabochon. Glue it so that the "sticky" side of the magnet is out. Let dry.

    • 6

Make additional magnetic attachment pieces for the ring, if desired. Use the same process for cutting out the shape of the setting from the magnet, then attach to different styles of cabochon or charms to make your ring changeable.
