How to Restore My Computer to Original Programs
Sometimes computers need to be restored to their original factory state. When your hard drive is infected by a virus or spyware you cannot remove, you may need to restore your computer's original programs and factory settings. This is an easy process that should not take much time and will return your computer to working condition. The instructions that follow are for HP and Compaq systems; please confirm with your manufacturer that these will also work for you.
Things You'll Need
- Desktop or laptop HP/Compaq computer running Windows (XP, Vista or Windows 7)
- Original installation CD-ROMs

Find the original software CD-ROMs that were included with your computer purchase. Do not insert them into your CD-ROM drive, but keep the discs near the computer; they will be required later.

Flip your computer upside down (for laptops) or on its side (for desktops) and write down the Windows serial number.

Remove any USB or extra disc drives from your system. Turn on the computer and toggle either the boot-up menu or BIOS--both will allow you to restore your computer to the original programs. Follow the instructions on your screen for how to access either; they vary from system to system.

Follow the instructions on the screen to restore your original programs. This will take some time; make sure to check on your computer to follow progress.

Insert the CD-ROMs with the original programs as needed. Depending on the computer and the manufacturer, there may be anywhere from 1 and 10 CD-ROMs.

Restart your computer once the restoration of the computer to its original programs is complete.

Tips & Warnings
Different computers require different procedures to restore original programs. If you are not running an HP or a Compaq system, please check with your manufacturer.
It is possible to restore original programs and to do a system restore even without the CD-ROMs in some cases. Please check with your manufacturer.
At some point, you may be required to enter your Windows serial number. Just enter the serial number on your computer's sticker.
Always be careful when restoring original programs and doing a system restore. Refer to your system's documentation in case any problems arise.
