Italian bread

Instead of throwing out day-old Italian bread, impress guests and family alike by making French toast with it. This sweet treat is a traditional, filling morning meal that costs very little. Frying the bread in oil makes it more like a doughnut than traditional French toast. It can be served warm straight from the pan with butter, maple syrup and a dollop of cottage cheese, or served cool with ice cream as a snack. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 2 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 3 eggs

Instructions

    • 1

Place the eggs and milk in a bowl. Beat with a fork until combined.

    • 2

Combine cinnamon and sugar in another bowl, and stir together with a dry spoon.

    • 3

Add the oil to the frying pan, and heat on a medium-high setting. When a bit of cinnamon sugar sprinkled in the oil bubbles, the oil is ready for cooking the bread.

    • 4

Dip a piece of bread in the egg mixture, covering both sides and around the edges.

    • 5

Place the bread into the heated frying pan, and cook each side until they are medium brown. Use a fork or tongs to turn the bread.

    • 6

Remove the bread from the frying pan with your fork or tongs, and place it immediately into the cinnamon sugar bowl.

    • 7

Coat the bread on both sides and edges with the cinnamon sugar mixture, and place it on a serving plate.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 4 through 8, using the rest of the bread.

Tips & Warnings

  • The oil and bread will be hot, so be careful.
