How to Make a Computer Keyboard Sound Like a Monkey

You can program your computer keyboard to make monkey sounds.

Working at a computer all day long can become boring. But what if your computer keyboard made monkey sounds instead of the usual blips and beeps? Sound bites such as monkey screams, calls and that signature "ooh ooh ahh ahh" are available online, often free to download. You can program these audio files to replace existing keystroke sound effects: When you press certain keys on the keyboard, close or open programs, or make errors, you can amuse and delight yourself and coworkers with the sounds of the monkey house.

1. Find your favorite monkey sound bites online. Websites such as www.wavsource.com, and www.monkeymania.uk.co/gosounds/ offer downloadable WAV files that are compatible with both Macs and PCs.

2. Download the WAV files of your choice. Click "download now" and save the files to your desktop or removable drive. Be sure to scan any files that you download with a virus-protection program.

3. Open your computer's control panel (for PC) or system preferences (Mac). This is where the settings are stored for your computer. Different makes and models of computers, as well as the various operating systems, have slightly different ways to access this information. If you are unsure of how to find your computer's settings menu, click on the "help" button in your task bar.

4. Choose the tab in your control panel (or system preferences) that lists "sounds" as a component and click on it.

5. Click on "system sounds." tab.This will open a menu of the various keys and functions on your keyboard that have factory installed sound bytes attributed to them. Highlight the particular key or function and then click "browse" to find the downloaded "monkey sounds" WAV file your choose. You may need to "click your way" through to the location of the sounds.

6. Choose a WAV file. When you find the file you like for the keystroke or function that you'd like to change, click on it. The name of the file will appear in the text box in the "system sounds" pop-up window. Click on "apply" and then "OK." Your computer will be squealing and jabbering instantly.

Tips & Warnings

• If the downloaded WAV files are arbitrarily labeled, give them descriptive names by right clicking on the file name, choosing "rename," and then typing a new name.
