How to Run Defrag on Vista

Organization is important to getting things done. When a program is modified or deleted, your computer files become fragmented. In order for your computer to run smoothly, files must be sequential and not scattered on your hard drive. Fragmented hard drives are slower to load and decrease your computer's performance. Disk Defragmenter is a s system utility tool that must be run periodically to keep your computer in good shape.

      Open your "Start" menu. Select "All Programs." Open your "Accessories" folder and choose "System Tools." Click "Disk Defragmenter" from the list of options. The other option is to open the "Start" menu and type "Defrag" into the search box. Click "Disk Defragmenter" to open.

      Click "Continue" if prompted for permission.

      Click "the "Defragment now..." button.

      Choose the disks that you want to defragment. Click "OK" to run the defragmenter.

    Do note that the Vista defragger like all native windows defraggers is very 'barebones' and not capable of a thorough defrag. It is very very slow, skips many fragmented files and unfortunately doesn't even have a proper progress indicator or a disk map.
