How to Multi-Highlight Hair

Add depth to your highlights by adding mulit-highlights or more than one color at a time. You can complete this process with two at-home hair highlighting kits available from any drugstore or grocery store. Choose complementary colors in the same tonal range for your highlights. For example, two shades of blond that are only one color step apart will give subtle multi-dimensional highlights. Use a highlighting cap if one comes with a kit or have someone help you apply highlights evenly with the provided highlighting brushes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Drape a towel or smock over your clothes while working. Highlights contain bleach that can damage clothing.

    • 2

Make sure your hair is clean and completely dry. Style it as you usually wear it, without using any hair products.

    • 3

Mix up both shades of highlight according to the kits' directions. You may only need to use half of each color. If so, mix half the liquid from each kit into two small glass bowls and apply highlight dye from the bowls.

    • 4

Put the highlighting cap on your head and tie it below your chin. Pull strands of hair through the holes in the cap with the provided hair hook.

    • 5

Place the provided gloves on and begin applying the highlights. If you're not using the highlighting cap, you'll apply the dye randomly wherever you want. In either case, use the provided brush or your gloved fingers to spread the dye through each strand you want highlighted.

    • 6

Use the darker shade lower on the head and the lighter shade higher on the crown, just as hair would naturally be highlighted by the sun.

    • 7

Follow the manufacturer's directions for how long to leave the dye on; then rinse and condition according to the kits' instructions. Enjoy your multi-highlights.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also purchase highlighting foil strips from a beauty supply store and apply highlights as they do in salons. To do this, hold the foil under a strand of hair, apply the dye and then fold the foil up to keep it in place.

  • Choose highlighting kits close to your current hair color. Choosing a highlight kit that's too light will create very dramatic streaks rather than natural-looking highlights.
