The Coustic XM-3 electronic crossover is designed to route line-level music signals to the correct speakers and amplifiers in an automobile audio system with component speakers. It has the ability to cross over a subwoofer, mid-bass and midrange speaker, and a high-frequency tweeter while also offering a separate crossover for the rear channel, allowing the use of speakers that perform differently in both the front and back of the car.

Power Requirements

Coustic designs the XM-3 to run on standard 14.4-volt, negative ground, direct current automobile power. Its maximum current draw is only 0.5 amperes.

Crossover Frequencies and Frequency Response

The XM-3 achieves response that is no more than three decibels below perfectly flat from 10 to 30,000 Hz. Its high pass crossover network for the front and rear can crossover at frequencies between 32 and 400 Hz, and can also be switched to operate as a high-frequency high-pass crossover in the front only, operating between 640 and 8,000 Hz. Its low-pass crossover for the subwoofer operates between 32 and 400 Hz. While the high-pass crossovers have a slope of 12 decibels per octave, the low-pass subwoofer crossover has a steeper 18-decibel-per-octave slope.

Boost and Gain

The XM-3's output has a 100-ohm impedance rating and is designed to offer six decibels of gain, or a one to two ratio. In addition, it has a bass boost function which can provide between zero and 12 decibels of boost, centered around 45 Hz.

Distortion and Noise

With only 0.01 percent total harmonic distortion when outputting a 1-volt signal, the XM-3 produces very little coloration. It is rated to operate at better than a 95 decibel signal-to-noise ratio, and to maintain 60 decibels of separation between channels.

Dimensions

Coustic's XM-3 is a very small device. It measures only 6-5/8 inches long, 5 inches wide and 1-3/4 inches tall.
