How to Use MAC Address With Wireless Security

A wireless network allows computers and other devices to connect to it without the use of cables or wires. It is convenient because resources on the network can be shared between all connected devices. Unfortunately, because the network is wireless it is more susceptible to security risks. If the network is not secure anyone can access it and use its resources, such as the Internet. One way to add an extra layer of security is to use the MAC address filtering option in the wireless router.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," then "Run" and type "cmd" in the open box. If your version of Windows has a search bar, type "cmd" in the bar, then click it when it appears in the results list. The Command window will open.

    • 2

Type "ipconfig/all" at the command prompt, then press the "Enter" key. The MAC address will be labeled "Physical Address." Record the information. Repeat the process for each computer and device on your network.

    • 3

Open a web browser on your computer. Type the IP address of the wireless router into the address bar. A common default IP address for routers is 192.168.1.2. Look in the user manual for your router's exact IP address. Enter the user name and password for the wireless router in the login page. The router's configuration window will open.

    • 4

Click the "Wireless" or "Advanced" tab. Click "MAC Address Control" or "MAC Filters." Some routers may also use the terms "Filters" or "Connection Controls."

    • 5

Click "Enable MAC Filtering" or "Only Allow Computers with the MAC Address Listed Below to Connect to the Network." Type in the name of each computer and/or device and its MAC address into the appropriate fields. Click "Apply" or "Save Settings." Only computers and devices with the MAC address listed on the settings page can connect to the network.
