You spot her across the room. Shining hair, bright eyes and a pretty smile. You want to start a conversation, but all thoughts in your mind cease as your heart thumps and your stomach jumps. Relax. Almost anyone can make small talk with a girl. As you focus on building a repertoire of conversation starters, try practicing in a mirror so you gain confidence. That way, the next time your mind goes blank just when you need it most, you won't even have to think. You'll be ready.

1. Make an observation about your surroundings, preferably a statement that can keep the conversation going. If at a party, for example, talk about the crowd, the room or the food. Say something like, "That spinach dip tastes really great."

2. Talk about current events. Before that night's cocktail party, peruse through the day's paper for an interesting news event you can bring up later. For example, you might mention the latest antic reported about a celebrity or local politician.

3. Listen to what the girl says in response. Sometimes, when a guy focuses too much on what he will say next, he misses important conversation pieces that will actually help him continue the conversation. Girls can tell when a guy listens, and they appreciate the attention.

4. Introduce yourself after you have exchanged a pleasantry or two with a girl. Then, ask her name. You two can then talk about what you do for work or where you go to school, discuss how you ended up at the same location and hopefully discover common interests.

5. Tell stories that elaborate on the girl's interests. For instance, if the girl really enjoys skiing, tell her about any times that you may have tried the sport. Or if she enjoys traveling, share any memories you have about exploring other places.

6. Ask open-ended questions that require more than a "yes" or "no" answer. The more you can ask questions requiring lengthy answers, the longer you can extend your conversation. Similarly, try to add extra information to your responses so that the girl can respond.
