How do I Create a Magnetic Board & Fun Parts That Move?

How do I Create a Magnetic Board & Fun Parts That Move? thumbnail
Magnetic boards aren't actually magnetic.

The term "magnetic board" is a misnomer. Magnetic boards aren't actually magnetic, but made with metals such as iron that attract magnets. Magnetic darts, refrigerator magnets and any other lightweight object with a sufficiently strong magnet will then cling to the board. Use magnetic boards for messages, imaginative play or travel board games with pieces that won't slide.

Instructions

    • 1

Coat a wooden board, fiberboard sheet or other flat surface with magnetic primer. Apply three coats of primer, letting it dry according to the directions between coats.

    • 2

Cover the primer with two layers of latex paint in the color of your choice, allowing it to dry between coats.

    • 3

Decorate the magnetic board as you wish. Cover it with decoupage medium and paste pictures from magazines and newspapers, playing cards, or any other paper decorations on it. Alternately, paint a picture on it.

    • 4

Glue magnets to the bottoms of action figures and plastic toy animals with a strong glue such as epoxy. Leave the miniatures to cure for 12 hours.

    • 5

Make flat parts out of old game pieces. Glue pictures to one side of a checker, poker chip or other flat piece. Glue a magnet to the other side as in step 4.
