How to Adopt a Soldier for Christmas
There are many organizations that provide support for soldiers throughout their deployment. Some of these organizations also give civilians the opportunity to 'adopt' soldiers, lending moral support during their deployment. This need is great particularly around the holidays as many Armed Forces personnel are serving overseas, away from their families. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Search the internet for "Adopt a Soldier" or use the references provided. One such service, Soldier's Angels, provides year-round support to men and women overseas (see Reference 1).
-
2
Register with a support organization. Most organizations require that you provide information about yourself and why you would like to assist a soldier. This information is then verified by the organization, and you become approved for "adoption."

3
Once you are assigned a soldier, prepare a care package. Many soldiers will provide information about items they need or want for the holidays. If this information is not provided, send popular items, such as personal hygiene products, nonperishable food items, books and magazines. Avoid sending prepackaged gift boxes; soldiers prefer a personal touch.
-
4
Prepare a card to send with the care package. The card should be festive and include personal and heart-felt words of support and gratitude for the soldier's continued service overseas.
-
5
Carefully package the items and card in a standard mailing box and address the package to the U.S. military address provided. Mail the box at least three weeks before Christmas to assure its timely arrival.
-
6
Continue to write letters and send care packages to your adopted soldier throughout his or her deployment. Soldiers need support year-round.
