How to Make the Background of a Photo Glow

If you need a way to add some extra appeal to your photos, consider giving them a glowing background. The glowing background allows the viewer's perception of the photo to change and take in more detail he usually wouldn't notice. Average printed photos work well for this project because the light shines through the paper easily. You can invite the entire family to partake in this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an electric picture frame with a lighted background. This is what gives your image a glowing effect. The frame must be large enough to accommodate your photo, so take a measurement of the photo before you purchase the frame.

    • 2

Lay the photo on the glowing frame face-down. This should show you a faded image of the image on front. Draw a light pencil outline around any people or items in the forefront of the image that take focus away from the picture background.

    • 3

Move the photo to a flat, clean surface facing down. Carefully fill in the outlines with black acrylic paint. The paint will not damage the face of the photo, but it will darken that part of the photo so it does not glow.

    • 4

Place the photo on the glowing frame after the paint dries. The background should stand in stark contrast against the objects in the forefront of the image. If you see any lighted spots the paint doesn't cover, take the photo out of the glowing frame and paint it again.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer a glow in the dark look with your photo, you can paint the background of the photo with transparent glow in the dark paint. In the daytime, you will still see the whole image as you would normally. At night, however, it will have a spooky green glow in the background.
