How to Disable a Core Processor

Disable a processor for troubleshooting purposes using the Microsoft Configuration Utility.

Processors with multiple cores are commonly found in most modern computers. They provide the ability to work with multiple applications simultaneously without performance degradation. However, older applications were not designed with multiple processors in mind and they may not function correctly on those systems. While Windows allows you to set processor core allocations with the affinity setting of the Task Manager, this may not solve problems with programs that need to automatically run at startup. Fortunately, Windows has a method available to prevent multiple processor cores from running during Windows startup.

Instructions

    • 1

Press and hold the "Windows" and "R" keys on your keyboard simultaneously to load a Run box.

    • 2

Type "Msconfig" and press the "Enter" key. This loads the Microsoft Configuration Utility.

    • 3

Click the "Boot" tab. This loads the configurable options to modify the Windows boot file.

    • 4

Click the "Advanced options" button, and then click in the check box next to "Number of processors."

    • 5

Click in the drop-down menu below "Number of processors," and select the number of processors you want to specify. If you want to run the operating system and programs on a single processor or core, you would select "1."

    • 6

Press the "OK" button to save your change, and then restart the computer.
