Properly store DVD discs to keep the information contained on them safe.

A digital-video disc is used to store data or video. There are several different types of DVDs, including recordable DVDs, such as DVD-R and DVD-RW and the nonrecordable DVD-ROMs. The DVD collection in a home might include Hollywood blockbusters or treasured family movies. DVDs that are improperly stored or handled can become scratched or broken. Proper storage of DVD discs will ensure that the contents contained on them is readable and enjoyable for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid touching the disc's surface. The disc should be picked up by sticking your finger through the hole or by grabbing the disc by the outer edges.

    • 2

Clean the DVD with a soft, cotton cloth, moving from the inside of the disc toward the outside in straight strokes. Stubborn dirt or smudges can be removed by dipping the soft cloth in rubbing alcohol.

    • 3

Place the DVDs in jewel cases, as opposed to a sleeve. These will provide more protection against scratches, dust and damage.

    • 4

Store the DVDs in a closed box, cabinet or storage unit that is away from direct sunlight or humidity. Place the DVDs into the storage device vertically instead of stacking them horizontally, which could place added pressure onto the discs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid eating, smoking or drinking while handling the DVD discs. All of these activities can lead to smudges on the disc that may cause damage.

  • Avoid placing adhesive labels directly onto the disc for identification purposes. Instead, label the case that holds the disc.
