How to Backcomb Your Crown Hair Easily
One hairstyle that never seems to go out of fashion is big, sexy hair. There are several products on the market that are inserted onto the crown of your head to give your hair that "bumped-up" look. Instead of spending money on these types of products, use your natural hair to create volume at the crown of your head. This is done by a process called backcombing, which requires only a special comb and a little bit of hairspray to achieve the volume you desire. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

1
Separate a 1/2-inch thick section of hair at the back of the crown of your head with the backcomb, a special comb made for teasing and backcombing (see Resources). Comb the hair upward to remove any tangles.
-
2
Position the comb about an inch or two from the roots of the strand. In quick, light motions, comb down the strand toward the root, alternating between the front and the back of the section of hair. Do not use too much pressure, since this may break the hair.

3
Continue combing in this manner until you are about halfway up the 1/2-inch section of hair. Spray the area lightly with hairspray. Flip this section of hair over your face and out of the way.
-
4
Separate another 1/2-inch section of hair behind the first section and comb it upward to remove tangles, then repeat steps 2 and 3. Lightly comb over fuzziness on the surface of the section to keep the backcomb smooth.
-
5
Continue the backcombing process in steps 2 and 3 until you reach the hair near the front of your head. Section off a 1/2-inch thick section of hair, running vertically along the backcombed section, on the side of your head.
-
6
Repeat steps 2 and 3 to backcomb the side section of hair. Separate one more section on that side and backcomb it. Then repeat the process on the other side of your head.
-
7
Push all of the backcombed hair back and brush over the surface gently with a hairbrush. Spread the sections outward over the top of your head to even out the bouffant. Part your hair in the desired direction and smooth your hair with the brush.

Tips & Warnings
When brushing out the backcomb, do not let the teeth of the brush go all the way through your hair. Instead, keep the teeth just below the surface of the backcomb to remove fuzz and smooth your hair.
