How to knit a scarf in an hour
Knitting is a fun and relaxing craft. There is a wide array of color, texture and size of yarn available today. New techniques have added fun and interest to a craft that was once considered only appropriate for Grandma. An evening knitting project that can actually be finished in one sitting is an exciting first project. You can wear this scarf yourself or donate it to a retirement community, cancer center, or U.S. troops.

1
Cast eight stitches onto one of the needles with your yarn. Casting is as simple as making slip knots. The knots need to be fairly close together, but don't make them too tight. If they are tight it is hard to slide the needle into the stitch and slip it off onto the other needle.

2
Place the needle with stitches in your left hand and put the empty needle in your right. Slip the tip of the empty needle into the front loop of the first cast-on stitch. Wrap the yarn that is attached to the cast stitch, around the needle with stitches.

3
Pull the right needle down and through the newly made loop. Keep the yarn that is attached to the skein held loosely in your hand. This should pull the new loop through the back of the original stitch and you now have a stitch on the right-hand needle. This is called a knit stitch and is the very first stitch to learn. There are many other stitches but this one is the basis of knitting.

4
Repeat the process for all the cast-on stitches. You should now have a needle full of new stitches. Switch it to your left hand and put the now empty needle in your right. You will continue doing this until your skein in almost empty.

5
Attach another skein. Leave a couple of inches of the old skein unknitted. Pull some yarn from the new one and simply tie the two ends together. When you are finished you can use a crochet hook to tuck the ends into the stitches so they are not obvious. Continue knitting until you have only a foot of yarn left.

6
Bind off. You will need to knit two stitches and then use the left hand needle to pull the first stitch over the second and off the needle. The looping result will lock the stitch. Knit another stitch and pull the previous one over it. This process is repeated until you have just one stitch left. Loop the yarn through the stitch and pull it off the needle, tightening the yarn. Use the crochet hook to tuck in the joined ends and to pull the tail of remaining yarn through some stitches to hide it. If it is a long tail, break the yarn to just an inch.
