How to Give a Good Massage Without Oil

How to Give a Good Massage Without Oil thumbnail
A massage can reduce muscle tension.

The simple act of a massage can be helpful in so many ways. It can bring a couple closer together by intensifying intimacy, it can sooth an injury and reduce stress. Having an allergy or dislike for massage oil can deter you from getting a beneficial massage. Most massage oils are made from a sunflower oil base, which can cause severe allergic reactions in some people. Others simply do not like the heavy fragrances associated with massage oil. You can give a basic massage without oils with a few simple steps.

Use lotion instead of massage oil. There are many lotions on the market for those with allergies or for those who do not like fragrance. Using your thumb and fingers, apply gentle pressure to shoulders, the nape of the neck and the lower back. The lotion will help your hands glide across the skin and prevent irritation.

Use hot stones to replace massage oil. Hot stones can be a relaxing way to ease tension in sore muscles and stimulate blood flow. Increasing blood flow to muscles can be a healing aspect of using hot stones. Warm the stones using a stone warmer purchased at a spa shop. Gently lay the stones on key points of the body that retain tension, such as the nape of the neck, shoulders and lower back. Alternate stones every 10 minutes until your massage is complete or the stones are cool.

Use only your hands to give a massage. A gentle massage with no lubricant or heat can be just as relaxing as one with it. Place your hands on the area you wish to massage and apply gentle pressure with your thumbs, fingers and palms to the body. Focus on the nape of the neck, shoulders and lower back. Do not apply a great amount of pressure because using no lubrication can irritate the recipient's skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for options to massage oil if you have allergies, like baby oil, which is gentle and typically does not cause allergies.

  • Always test a lotion or other skin product on a small area of skin first if you have allergies. Watch for signs of hives and other symptoms and discontinue use if they occur.

  • Avoid the spine during a massage unless you are a trained professional. Massaging the spinal area can injure the spine.
