How to Throw a Tea Party for Little Girls
Legend has it that tea drinking can be traced back to the Chinese Emperor Chen Nung in 2737 BC. However, tea parties evolved much later in Europe and Britain during the 16th and 17th centuries. Upscale American hotels began hosting tea parties at the end of the 19th century. Today, tea parties are enjoyed by people of all ages, even little girls. Throwing a tea party for little girls gives the youngsters a chance to dress up, experience a formal setting and possibly develop an affinity for tea. Does this Spark an idea?

Party Preparations
-
1
Send out tea party invitations two to three weeks before the party. Draw a teapot or teacup shape or use a template for the invitation (see Resources). Copy the template or freehand drawing onto construction paper or card stock. Write down the details of the party such as date, time and location. Staple a tea bag to the top of the cup or teapot invitation. Write a special message on the tea bag tag such as "Bring your favorite stuffed friend" or "Dress-up clothes available at the party."
-
2
Gather supplies for the party such as tea, sugar cubes, spoons, teapot, tea cups and saucers, a box of dress-up clothes, shoes, hats and gloves and a lace tablecloth.
-
-
3
Plan activities for the party to entertain the guests. Set up a dressing room where they can pick out clothing, shoes, hats and gloves to wear during the party. Stock extra sugar cubes for a sugar cube tower contest to see who can stack their sugar cubes the highest in a short amount of time.
-
4
Make tea bag party favors by filling small white paper sacks with items such as costume jewelry, herbal fruit tea bags and paper fans. Fold and staple the top of each bag and attach a tea bag tag with a piece of string. Write each party guest's name on the tag.
-
5
Make a centerpiece from an old china teapot filled with fake flowers and lollipops.
-
6
Bake mini cupcakes and top them with white icing and a gumdrop or bake cookies and top them with icing and sprinkles.

-
7
Cover the party table with a lace tablecloth and place a small plate and a teacup and saucer at each guest's place.
-
8
Spread cream cheese or pimento cheese on slices of bread to make sandwiches. Add thin slices of cucumber to the cream cheese sandwiches. Cut the crusts off the bread and slice the sandwich into four quarters. Place the quarters on a pretty serving dish and place it on the party table.
-
9
Put mini cupcakes or cookies on serving platters and arrange them on the table.
-
10
Brew herbal fruit-flavored tea for the little girls and place it in a teapot. Put ice in the pot if you think there's a risk the children might burn themselves.
-
11
Direct guests to the dressing room as they arrive and then seat them at the table. Serve the tea and refreshments before or after playing games.

Tips & Warnings
Thrift stores often have tea sets and clothes, hats and shoes that could serve as dress-up props for kids.
Fill the sandwiches with anything you think the children may like. Ask parents about food allergies, especially if you use peanut butter.
Consider the age of your party guests. You may want to use plastic cups and saucers instead of a real tea set that may break.
