Camellia blooms are 2 to 4 inches in diameter.

Camellia (Camellia japonica) is a large evergreen shrub valued for the big, colorful red, pink or white blooms that adorn the plant in winter and spring. Once camellia is planted, the bush will grow for many years with virtually no care. Although the shrub can reach heights of 25 feet, most plants will reach 6 to 12 feet with a spread of up to 10 feet. Camellia is hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 7 to 9. Instructions

    • 1

Water your camellia regularly until the shrub is established, indicated by the appearance of new growth. After that time, water the shrub only during hot, dry weather. Water deeply to saturate the soil, then allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again.

    • 2

Spread 2 to 4 inches of shredded bark, pine needles, straw, or other organic mulch around the base of the plant. Mulch will keep the roots cool and the soil moist.

    • 3

Fertilize camellia bushes after the plant is finished flowering in spring. Use a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plant. Follow the directions on the package carefully, as too much fertilizer can burn the leaves.

    • 4

Remove dead or damaged branches anytime, using pruning shears. Trim any long branches that detract from the desired shape of the bush. Thin a few branches from the center of the bush if the foliage becomes crowded.
