How to Paint Vegetable Stencils

A vegetable stencil pattern can be applied to a kitchen wall as a border. The same stencil can be used to coordinate a set of kitchen linens, including placemats, tablecloths and napkins using fabric paint. Using your own stencil will create a one-of-a-kind design. Look for photographs of individual or groupings of vegetables in magazines and cookbooks for pattern ideas and trace the veggies on Mylar stencil sheets that can be found at art supply stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Enlarge photographs of vegetables on a copier machine to the desired size of the finished stencil design.

    • 2

Place the clear Mylar sheet over the design. Draw around the design with the pencil.

    • 3

Cut the design out with the craft knife on a cutting board.

    • 4

Place the stencil over the object to stenciled, for example the kitchen wall or a placemat. Use small pieces of masking tape to secure it in place.

    • 5

Dip the stippling paintbrush in the paint. Pick up a small amount of paint. Practice on scrap paper to achieve a uniform paint technique of pouncing by pushing the brush down on the paper repeatedly to eliminate brushstroke lines.

    • 6

Carefully lift the stencil away from the stenciled object, upward, to avoid smearing the paint.
