How to Repair Rust on a Chevy Truck

Chevy trucks have been popular for decades. Many classic Chevy trucks are still in demand. But as with any truck or car, rust is a common problem. Rust occurs when moisture and metal are in constant contact. Although trucks (and also cars) have a rustproof coating when they are new, the rustproof coating wears off over time or is scratched off in fender benders or other minor accidents. Removing rust needs to be a regular part of truck maintenance.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub away all small rust spots with a wire brush or steel wool pad. If not treated, small rust spots become large rust spots.

    • 2

Put on rubber gloves. Pour naval jelly onto a steel wood pad and scrub it into larger rust areas. Wait for five to 10 minutes or however long the directions say to leave on the naval jelly.

    • 3

Wipe away the rust with a rag or paper towel. Make certain all traces of the naval jelly are gone.

    • 4

Brush on a rust-inhibiting primer made for trucks and automobiles on the formerly rusted areas. Let the primer dry. The primer protects against rust formation.

    • 5

Use touch-up paint in the same color of the car's paint as needed. Chose a rust-inhibiting paint made for touching up trucks and cars. Let dry.
