How to Make Friends at Church

How to Make Friends at Church thumbnail
A place to worship; a place to meet friends

No matter how welcoming the congregation, sometimes going to a church that is relatively new to you can feel like being back in high school during an assembly. You can see lots of people who know each other and have friendships and there you are, feeling a little bit alone. At some churches, people will seek out newcomers, but that doesn't guarantee a new friend, even though the idea of being with people who are all there for one profound purpose does give you a head start on making connections.

Instructions

Compliment people. If they make a comment in bible study or during a sharing session, let them know how much it meant to you. Relate your experience of belief to theirs as shared. It's just like school or a new job; if you like someone's hair style or clothes, tell them. Then see if they return the volley by asking things of you.

Use your kids. Children make friends sometimes faster and more easily than grown ups. So, if your child is hitting it off with a certain kid, introduce yourself to the parent(s). Church is a good place to share ideas about how to raise children in a changing world. Share your values and exchange suggestions of good school programs or online learning sites that support your beliefs.

Volunteer. Offer to bring donuts, do flowers or participate in the collection process. Make sure that the process requires a meeting or two where you can have some time with people on a smaller scale. If you feel connected to someone, hang out and ask them for extra advice on how to help. If you have served as a Deacon or choir assistant director previously in a church setting, let people know that you are interested in helping out at your new church, too.

Go to groups and bible study. Situations like this can be a great place to voice your opinions and get involved. Don't overdo it by trying to play pastor. Just be yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't go too fast and invite people out or to your home without having spent a bit of time with them.
