How to Set Up a Train Display
Creating a miniaturized world for your model trains is a fascinating and sometimes infuriating process. It requires patience, dexterity and creativity from you, but also the funds and the space to match your ambitions. Before setting up any train display, brainstorm and define the theme, scale and how you plan to set up your train display. Advance planning will save a lot of future headaches and maximize the beauty and scope of your model train set-up.

1
Measure the space you have for your project. This goes hand-in-hand with the scale of your project, or how big the pieces will be. If you only have a corner of your basement available, plan accordingly. Decide how you plan to display the track. Some tracks are laid on a small diorama that can easily fit on a shelf, while others are built like a theater stage and only part of the tracks can be seen. Elaborate set-ups and outdoor tracks are other options.

2
Create a theme for your train display. If it's around Christmastime, for instance, you might want a polar theme. Decide where your trains are heading and the setting, such as Virginia, 1962. This will tie together the elements of your train display.

3
Sketch a picture of the train display that incorporates the features and details you've decided on. This will be your blueprint during setup.

4
Create the base for your train track by laying the boards on top of sawhorses or a table. Glue the trees, rocks and other scenery to the board if you're certain of their placement. Otherwise, experiment a little with the scene before permanently attaching them to the board.
