How to Properly Write Book Titles in a Report

When writing a report, it is usually necessary to refer to other materials not part of the actual paper. This can be anything from other papers, to interviews, to movies, or even books. Books are the most commonly used reference for reports. A single piece of dialogue or description can be talked about for years. However, when referring to a book there is a specific format that must be adhered to when writing the title in the report itself.

1 Write the full title

Write the full title of the book in your report.

2 Highlight the title

Highlight the title you just wrote and italicize the whole thing. One way to do this is to hold the button "Ctrl" and press the "I" button on the keyboard. If you did this right the words will look slanted.

3 Mention the author's

Mention the author's name if you have not done so in the report already. This can be done before or after the title of the book itself.

  • When used in a report, the Bible and the books within are not italicized. This is simply convention.
  • For longer titles, once you have written out the whole title once, you may refer to it later on with a shortened version that must make sense. This shortened title must be italicized as well.
