How to Reload Windows With a Disk Image

You restore Windows using disk images saved to DVD discs.

A disk image is a snapshot of all files, programs and system settings saved to a DVD. You use this disk image to restore files to your hard drive, including the Windows operating system. The disk image restores Windows if the operating system is not functioning properly. Windows has a restore option for your operating system using a disk image. The process lets you quickly restore operating-system files from any disk image.

Instructions

1. Click the Windows "Start" button and then click "Control Panel." Click "System and Security" and then click "Backup and Restore."

2. Click the backup and restore option labeled "Recover System Settings on your Computer." Click "Advanced Recovery Options" to display a new window.

3. Click the option labeled "Use a system image you created earlier to recover your computer." A window appears alerting you that data will be overwritten and system settings restored.

4. Insert your DVD disc image into the drive. Click the "Restart" button with the disk-image DVD inserted in the DVD-ROM drive. The system uses the DVD disk image to restore the Windows operating system. This may take several minutes to complete.
