Do you know how fast you need to walk to get to school on time? Do you need to know how fast you need to run to win a race against your biggest competitor? Do you need to know how fast you need to drive to get to your mother's house in another city in a certain amount of time? If so, you must be able to calculate minutes per mile. Here on instructions how to do the calculation.

Determine the distance you need to go. This generally means the distance from your home to your destination. Calculate your distance in miles. If you don’t know the distance between two addresses, you can get that information from an online mapping program such as Mapquest.com.

Let us say you need to get from your home to your mother's home in a different city. Your map search reveals they are 1200 miles apart.

Determine how fast you want to be there in seconds. If you are driving, and want to drive for two days, with 10 hours of driving each day, then you want to get from point A to point B in 20 hours. To convert your time to seconds, you will use the formula (hours X 60 X 60) + (minutes X 60) + seconds. In this case, we only have hours to calculate, and those 20 hours equals 1200 minutes, which equals 72000 seconds to get from point A to point B.

Divide the seconds by the number of miles. Use the formula S ÷ D = Seconds per Mile

In this example, you would calculate 72000 ÷ 1200 = 60 seconds per mile.

Convert the seconds into minutes by dividing by 60. 60 ÷ 60 = 1. It will take you one minute to drive one mile.

Your trip will take 72,000 seconds or 1200 minutes or 20 hours.

Tip

  • Don't try to travel an unreasonable speed speed to get to your location on time. Adjust your travel time as necessary.
