1
Snap open the screw covers on the rear of your present Kohler toilet seat. Steady the end of a slotted screwdriver in the head of the screws that anchor the seat. Grip the nut underneath the bowl, using an adjustable wrench. Turn the screw counterclockwise, using the screwdriver, and remove the screw. Also remove the washers, which may be between the screw head and the bowl on top, as well as between the nut and bowl underneath.

2
Wipe the bowl area with a sponge, spraying a cleaning product or your choice of disinfectant spray. Clean the hinge post areas of any leftover debris and rust from the old bolts. Wipe underneath where you removed the nuts from, as well. Clean around the entire rim of the bowl.

3
Measure your toilet bowl, starting from the front center bowl edge and going back to the center of the two hinge posts. Use a tape measure. Use this measurement to determine if your bowl demands an elongated seat or a round seat. An elongated seat will not fit properly on a bowl sized for a round seat, and neither will a round seat fit properly on an elongated bowl. A measurement of approximately 18 1/2 inches matches an elongated bowl, and a 16 1/2-inch measurement matches a round bowl.

4
Measure the distance between the bowl hinge posts, using the tape measure, jto ensure that the measurement also matches the standard length of the majority of seats. This length is normally 5 1/2 inches.

5
Install your new Kohler toilet seat. Follow the included installation instructions. Basic seat installation involves inserting the two seat screws, connected to the new seat, down through the hinge post holes. Thread a washer up the screw from underneath the bowl, facing the beveled side up. Install the nut on the screw from underneath. Tighten the nut with an adjustable wrench. Do not overtighten.
