Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of card stock into a shape that coordinates with the theme of your birthday party. Draw the shape freehand, or trace an image from a coloring book or use a large cookie cutter. Ideas include airplanes, paper dolls, teddy bears or a geometric shape. Alternately, you can fold a piece of card stock in half to make the base of the card.

Compose the wording that you will use on the invitation. When thinking of the wording, don't write directly on the cards; write on scrap paper or in a word processing program. First, write a headline to your invitation. Show your enthusiasm by using action verbs and an exclamation point. Be specific when filling out the party details. If there is a theme, be sure to convey that information to your guests, so that they can dress appropriately if need be. Match the style of party to the wording on your party invitation, whether it is casual, formal or a surprise.

    • 3

Type the party invitation details into a word processing program on your computer. Play with the font, size and colors of the letters until they are they way you like. Print a copy for each party invitation.

    • 4

Add depth to your card by creating layers. Cut a piece of cardstock smaller than the base shape. Use a glue stick to stick this piece on top on top of the base card you've already created. Then center and glue the printed party details on the top layer.

    • 5

Add stickers or rubber stamp embellishments along the edges of the invitation. You can thread a ribbon through two hole-punched areas on the top or side, and tie it into a bow.
