Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family Planning
The sympto-thermal method of natural family planning provides a safe and effective means of birth control without having to ingest drugs or wear uncomfortable devices. The method relies on following a woman's monthly fertility cycle and abstaining from intercourse during the fertile times. For the birth control to be effective, diligence, patience and commitment to keeping strict records is key, so this is not the correct course if you are forgetful or have a hectic lifestyle.

1
Wait until the fifth day of your monthly period to begin charting your statistics. To be accurate, monitor your period carefully to know exactly when it started.
-
2
Take your temperature daily with a basal thermometer from the fifth day of your period until the first day of your new cycle, and chart your temperatures on your natural family planning chart.
-
-
3
Record the state of your mucus discharges along with your temperature on your chart. Being able to identify your various stages of mucus production will help determine what stage of your cycle you are in.
-
4
Refer to your chart to find the end of the your cycle's fertile phase. Wait for a spike in your basal temperature to stay constant for three days. Your mucus production should be clean and dry.
-
5
Stop having intercourse on the first day of your period on the next cycle to abstain during your potentially fertile phase. If you don't, the latest you should stop is the third day after your period ends.
