Microsoft Outlook Express is an online email client. If you are worried about losing email data and want to back up your account details, export the files and save them to another computer. Your email messages, address book and even account settings can be saved to your hard drive and kept as a backup. Save these files so that you can copy them to another computer for safekeeping.

Instructions

  1. Backup Email

    • 1

Click "Tools" on the menu bar, then select "Options."

    • 2

Select the "Maintenance" tab, then click "Store Folder."

    • 3

Highlight the folder location and copy this using the "Ctrl+C" option, or by right-clicking on the text and selecting "Copy."

    • 4

Click "Cancel" twice to exit the menu, then click the "Start" button on your Windows menu bar and select "Run" (Vista and Windows 7 users don't have the Run command, so use the windows Search bar instead).

    • 5

Paste the text in the Run or Search bar by pressing "Ctrl+V," or by right-clicking and selecting "Paste." Click "Enter" or press "OK" to continue.

    • 6

Select all the files listed on the pop-up screen and copy them to another folder location. These are your email data files, and you can later transfer them to another computer.

    Export Address Book

    • 7

Open Outlook Express and click "File," then "Export." Choose "Address Book."

    • 8

Click on the "Text File" option and click "Export."

    • 9

Click the "Browse" button and change the name of the file to "Address Book" by editing the "File Name" box. Click "Save" once finished, then "Next," then "Finish."

    Export Mail Settings

    • 10

Click "Tools" in your Outlook Express menu and select "Accounts."

    • 11

Click on the "Mail" tab and highlight your email account. Click "Export."

    • 12

Type "Mail Backup" in the "Save In" space, and click "Save."
