Unable to Connect to FTP Download Sites

Many sites will list downloads as FTP downloads rather than regular downloads. This process often allows for faster downloading the regular HTTP sites. To connect to these sites, however, you need specialized software and a few specific pieces of information about the site. With that software installed and the information on hand, setting up the program to connect to the FTP server and download the required information is relatively easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Download an FTP client. Two common free FTP programs are Filezilla and CuteFTP (see Resources).

    • 2

Navigate to the site from which you wish to download files. Identify the following information and enter it into the appropriate boxes in your FTP program: host address, port, login and password. Usually this information is provided by the site itself.

    • 3

Select the option in your FTP client to test the connection. If the connection works, connect to the server and download the files you wish to download. If the connection does not work, check your parameters and try again.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble connecting to an FTP site, try testing the connection using "secure FTP," "passive FTP" or both.

  • There are many settings available in FTP clients. Most of the time, you will not need to use more than the four listed in Step 2.
