Instructions for How to Replace the Enter Key on an HP Pavilion

Instructions for How to Replace the Enter Key on an HP Pavilion thumbnail
The keys on a keyboard are held in place by small prongs.

HP Pavilion computer keyboards are designed to have removable keys. Having the ability to remove keys is helpful for cleaning under the keys to remove any substance that may be causing the keys to stick or to replace a key that is broken. Removing and replacing the "enter" key is more difficult than the other number or letter keys but is possible. Replacing the "enter" key is certainly cheaper than replacing the entire HP Pavilion keyboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the HP Pavilion computer and disconnect the keyboard. Computers will often not recognize the keyboard if you disconnect and reconnect while the computer is still on.

    • 2

Slide the flat end of the screwdriver into the edge of the "enter" key on your HP Pavilion keyboard. Apply a gentle, upward pressure. The "enter" key is held in place by prongs, and you must release the key from the prongs to remove it. Continue this process around the edge of the enter key until the entire key releases. Remove the key.

    • 3

Look at the bottom of your new "enter" key and notice the position of the prongs. Line up the prongs with the bottom of the enter key as best you can. Apply gentle pressure with your fingers. The "enter" key is one of the harder keys to replace because it has more than one prong to line up. Have patience and try until the key snaps into place.

    • 4

Re-connect the keyboard to the HP Pavilion computer and turn on the computer. Test the keyboard by typing and make sure the "enter" key works as it should. If there are any issues, take the key back off, and put the new "enter" key back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your replacement "enter" key has a metal rod through it, place the rod into the key and align this as well as the prongs before asserting pressure to the key. The key will not snap into place until the rod and prongs are lined up.

  • You can use an "enter" key from another HP keyboard that is the same as yours by contacting HP and purchasing a replacement key or by purchasing an enter key from an online store that sells replacement keys for HP keyboards.
