How to Make a DVD for a Widescreen TV

How to Make a DVD for a Widescreen TV thumbnail
You can burn video files to DVD that will play in widescreen format.

Widescreen televisions display video using an aspect ratio of 16:9. This means that that for any given unit of measurement, the screen has a width of 16 units for every nine vertical units. For example, if a widescreen TV screen was 16 inches wide, it would be 9 inches tall. When you capture video footage in a DVD-authoring program on a computer, the aspect ratio remains what it was when the footage was shot. You can choose the aspect ratio of the footage when you export the video to DVD, and most editing programs allow you to choose a widescreen output setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the DVD-authoring software you want to use to create your DVD. Most DVD-authoring programs, such as AVS DVD Authoring, Sony DVD Architect, and Adobe Encore, allow you to choose between 16:9 Widescreen and the 4:3 standard aspect ratios for the finished DVD.

    • 2

Download and install the DVD-authoring program you have selected. Use the default location to install the program, if prompted. Open the program once it has successfully installed. This will open the DVD-authoring program interface window.

    • 3

Consult the DVD-authoring program guide for instructions on how to import the video that you want to burn to DVD into the program interface window. The DVD-authoring program will have a preview window that allows you to see the video you are working with. Follow the program's instructions to import your video file.

    • 4

Select the "Widescreen" project preference, so that your video footage displays in widescreen format. Consult your program's instructions to find out where to set the widescreen preference. Some programs will not use the term "Widescreen," but will use the aspect ratio, "16:9" instead, but both have the same meaning.

    • 5

Check your program's output settings to ensure that the video will be burned to DVD in widescreen format. Some programs use the preference that you have chosen for your project as the settings used when it creates your DVD. With others, you have to select the widescreen option in the output settings. Use the program's instructions to find out where the output settings are, and ensure that the aspect ratio is set to widescreen.

    • 6

Use the DVD-authoring program to build a DVD video file containing the settings you have configured, including the widescreen setting. This creates a file that you can burn directly to a blank DVD disk, placed in your DVD burner, or you can choose to save the file to your computer's hard drive, and burn it at a later time.
