How to Put a Serpentine Belt on an Alternator for a 1992 Dodge Caravan

The 1992 Dodge Caravan engines comes equipped with a serpentine belt that is responsible for operating all of the accessories--the alternator, air conditioner, power steering and the water pump--at the same time. The belt is turned around the accessories by the crankshaft. If the belt becomes excessively cracked or frayed, change it immediately before it breaks. If the belt breaks, all of the accessories will cease to work.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram on the top of the fan shroud. The routing diagram has the routing instructions for the belt. Refer to this diagram when routing the new belt.

    • 2

Locate the belt tensioner on the front of the engine. The tensioner is a two-part component with a spring-loaded arm on one end and a roller pulley attached to the other end. The tensioner for the 1992 Dodge Caravan is located on the front, left-hand side of the engine below the alternator. Use the bolt head in the middle of the roller pulley to turn the tensioner.

    • 3

Rotate the tensioner clockwise with the breaker bar and a metric socket. The tensioner for the 1992 Dodge Caravan models rotates clockwise to relieve the tension from the belt.

    • 4

Remove the old belt from the tensioner pulley and the other accessory pulleys. Then, pull the belt out of the engine compartment and match the belt to the new belt to ensure that the new belt is the proper size.

    • 5

Route the new belt around the accessory pulleys by following the routing instructions on the belt routing diagram. Rotate the tensioner clockwise with the breaker bar and socket. Slide the belt under the tensioner pulley and slowly release the tensioner. As the tensioner is retracting, it will pull the belt to the proper tension. Inspect the serpentine belt to ensure that it is properly seated inside of the alternator pulley and the other accessory pulleys.

    • 6

Crank the engine for about 10 seconds to completely seat the belt inside of all of the pulleys. Turn the engine off and recheck the belt just to ensure that it is secure inside of each accessory pulley. Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the belt routing diagram is needed, the diagram is located on the top, left-hand side of the fan shroud. The diagram gives the proper routing instructions for routing the belt around the accessory pulleys.

  • Always remove the keys from the vehicle before working inside of the engine compartment to prevent anyone from accidentally cranking the engine.
