How to Add Toner to a 61X Cartridge

The 61X is a toner cartridge produced by Hewlett-Packard for use in its LaserJet line of printers. Because replacing an empty 61X cartridge can be expensive, some choose to refill the empty cartridge with toner ink. The refilling process is not difficult, and with the proper black replacement toner ink, you can fill the 61X cartridge easily and return to your laser printing.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the HP 61X toner cartridge from your LaserJet printer. Place it on a flat surface protected by plastic sheets, newspaper or paper towels to protect against spills.

    • 2

Position the 61X cartridge so the top faces up.

    • 3

Locate the refilling cap on the left side of the HP 61X's top surface. Use a penknife or utility blade to pry off the plastic cap. If you cannot remove the cap, drill a hole into the surface of the plastic cap with a thumb drill. Enlarge the hole enough so it can accommodate the end of the refilling funnel.

    • 4

Insert the funnel into the opened refill hole or enlarged drilled hole.

    • 5

Pour 120 grams of black toner replacement ink into the funnel to fill the body of the HP 61X cartridge.

    • 6

Remove the funnel and replace the refilling cap. If you drilled into the cap, cover the hole with a piece of aluminum tape.
