How to Assemble a Bass Head Drum on a Ludwig Junior Drum Kit

How to Assemble a Bass Head Drum on a Ludwig Junior Drum Kit thumbnail
Correct placement and tuning of the bass drum head is necessary for a good bass drum sound.

Ludwig, a maker of drum kits and other percussion products, makes drum kits designed specifically for younger, smaller drummers. Ludwig junior drum kits can help younger drummers begin to master the art of drumming from an early age. Like the other drums in the kit, heads must be placed and tuned on the bass drum head correctly to ensure a clean sound. This will also help the drum head last longer. A bass drum head placed and tuned incorrectly could lead to the head breaking or giving off a choked or sloppy sound.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bass drum shell on its side, so that one of the openings (the part where the head will go) is facing up. If the side of the drum facing up has the drum spurs (the legs that hold up the bass drum) close to the top of the opening, then you're looking at the front of the bass drum.

    • 2

Place the bass drum head on the shell, making sure the head rests comfortably over the edges of the shell. If you're working on the front side of the bass drum, the bass drum head should be the front bass drum head, which will have "Ludwig" across the top.

    • 3

Place the hoop onto the bass drum, so that it presses down on the edges of the bass drum head.

    • 4

Insert the tension rods into the holes on the bass drum hoop, and then place the ends of the tension rods into the lugs on the bass drum. Begin tightening the tension rods with your fingers until you're unable to comfortably tighten them anymore.

    • 5

Turn a tension rod one-half turn, using a drum key, and then repeat the process with the other tension rods, alternating sides of the drum. For example, turn the tension rod one-half turn and then do the same for the tension rod that is straight across on the hoop. Keep tightening until the head seems relatively tight. Don't tighten the tension rods all the way. Tighten it until you get a nice, clean sound out of the drum. Once satisfied, turn the drum over and repeat this entire process with the bass drum head for the other side.
