How to Dye Your Hair With Lemons

How to Dye Your Hair With Lemons thumbnail
Lemon juice contains natural bleach, which can change your hair color.

Lemons---which contain a natural bleaching agent---are a common home remedy for lightening hair. For people with dark hair, using lemon juice---especially when combined with heat---can dye hair red or yellowish. For those with blonde or light brown hair, lemon juice can bleach the hair color a couple of levels without using chemical bleach or harsh boxed kits. Mixing strained lemons with water will allow you to enjoy the benefits of lemon's natural bleach and will temper lemon's natural acidity. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Strain two whole lemons in a bowl with a quart of water.

    • 2

Pour the diluted lemon juice into your spray bottle.

    • 3

Spray the mixture onto your hair. To dye the whole head, cover all of your hair. Otherwise, you can apply the juice to selected strands of hair to create natural highlights.

    • 4

Leave the lemon juice in your hair while you sit out in the sun for up to an hour if you do not plan on using heat. Otherwise, dry your hair with a hair dryer, which will accelerate the bleaching process.

    • 5

Follow up the lemon treatment with a shower, washing out all of the lemon juice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a good conditioner on your hair after dying it with lemon because lemon juice can make the hair dry out and become brittle.

  • Do not use lemon juice---or other products containing lemon designed to lighten the hair---on your hair every day.

  • Lemon juice might turn brown or black hair orange rather than blonde.
