How to Disable Sleep Mode on a DVR

Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) are used to record programming for later viewing. DVRs can be paid for on a monthly rental basis as part of your cable TV package or can be purchased outright and then used by paying a small fee to a provider. DVRs contain a hard drive to store the video and are often programmed to go into a sleep mode to save energy during certain hours or after a certain period of non-use. There are many DVR providers and types of systems; depending on the one you have, sleep mode can sometimes be disabled.

Contact your cable provider if your DVR is part of a cable package. DVR's you rent do not come with a manual and the cable provider can access the programming of the box. Explain you would like to disable the sleep mode on your box. Your cable provider may or may not allow this. You may be given the option to put your box to sleep for hours that you set rather than the box going to sleep during non-use times.

Consult your user manual if you purchased your DVR. The manual will describe how the sleep mode works and give detailed instructions on how to set a timer or disable the function. Each DVR is different and not all DVR's allow you to disable the sleep mode function.

Contact the DVR manufacturer if you do not have the user manual. Ask the technical support team for instructions on how to disable your DVR from sleep mode. Every DVR is different and some will allow you to disable the sleep mode, others to set timers and some DVR's do not allow you to adjust the sleep mode at all. If possible, ask the manufacturer to send you a user's manual for future reference or provide you with a website link to download the manual.
